On 28/07/2017 at 13:40 The Iuventa was had the intention to perform joint training at sea with Golfo Azzuro (GA). While doing this, the Iuventa crew  overheard radio communication between GA and Libyan Coast Guard (LCG) on CH16 where the LCG asked GA to proceed 5 nautical miles to the north to carry out a rescue operation.

After half an hour, at 14:15  LCG insisted on the order, however GA was not able to comply  due to lines in their propeller. Considering this, the Iuventa started to move towards the area.

At 14:48 both Rigid-hulled inflatable boats (RIBs) were instructed to stay close alongside Iuventa; all crew aboard was mustered on aft deck.

At 14:50 the LCG called the Iuventa on CH16 and ordered: “Stay away from the area”. Following this, the Iuventa answered: “Copy. We are proceeding our course.”  In spite of this, the LCG approached ,pointed guns towards Iuventa and circled the ship once.

At 14:52 LCG requested information regarding flag state, position report and migrants on board. In response, the Iuventa confirmed that they only had their crew aboard. Subsequently, LCG approached GA again to reconfirm that they were leaving the area.

In spite of this, at 15:18, LCG asked the Iuventa about the position of another NGO vessel. In response, the crew confirmed that they had no information about another NGO vessel apart from GA.

Finally, at 15:18 LCG escorted both Iuventa and GA out of the 24 nautical miles zone and subsequently proceeded south.
